If you're looking for superb quality CNC lathes, CNC machining centers, and CNC grinders, you can't go wrong with Okuma. With over 100 years of history and tradition, Okuma has been a leader in the industry for some time - and it shows in the quality of their CNC machines.
A Bit of History
Inventor Elishi Okuma founded Okuma all the way back in 1898 as the Okuma Noodle Machine Co. Its goal? The manufacture and sale of - you guessed it - noodle making machines. It wasn't until 1904 that Okuma abandoned its culinary roots and started selling machine tools, and in 1918, it was established as Okuma Machinery Works Ltd.
Okuma grew quickly from there, becoming the number one machine tool producer in Japan by 1937. But in 1963, Okuma did something that really changed the game - by developing the Okuma Control (OSP), Okuma became Japan's only manufacturer of both the machine and the control. This innovation was followed by a flood of others, with Okuma developing the first double-column machining center in 1964 and continuing to develop top-of-the-line vertical machining centers, horizontal machining centers, and CNC lathes. In fact, Okuma states that its own large double-column machining centers are used to manufacture parts for other Okuma machines. For these reasons, Okuma has grown to be a top international maker of CNC machines.
Tradition Mixed With Precision in Okuma CNC Lathes
What really stands out to us about Okuma, though, is that they've kept the practices of the old masters alive. Okuma still has master hand-scrapers on staff to meticulously craft their machines. By keeping the human touch incorporated in their manufacturing process, Okuma creates pieces that are literally handcrafted to fit together perfectly. And that, to us, is impressive.
