Lynch details the five most important features that CNC machines offer, which are not available on non-CNC equipment:
1) Consistency of workpieces produced
2) Faster workpiece machining resulting in best cycle times
3) Lowered skill level of machinist – though he specifies that training is still needed and goes on to explain the differences in running versus programming the machine
4) Complexity of workpieces to be machined
5) Flexibility, faster turn-around, and smaller lots
While production lines and budgets vary by project and organization, all manufacturers share a few main concerns – how to make good quality parts in the least amount of time and at the lowest possible cost.
Lynch does not bring up cost in this top five list, but goes on to state that their long-term value can far outweigh the long-term value of a comparable manual machine. While CNC machinery is not nearly as expensive as they used to be, they offer precision and can last much longer than five years with proper maintenance.
Used CNC machines, or surplus equipment, can provide an even greater savings, as much as 60 percent or more over new equipment. MMI, in particular, offers significant savings through its auction and direct purchase platforms. All machines require condition reports and are in good working condition, unless clearly stated on the listings
